Beyond So-So, a Little More on Editing

One of the things I love about my little Miakins is that she is finally getting girlie hair, and by girlie, I mean longer-ish. However, most of this length is in the back, and she's coming dangeroulsy close to a mullet. {When my younger brother Myles was that age he had a rat tail. Remember when those were in style? Ewwwww.} For now, however, I find Mia's wavy little wings adorable. So, when I snapped this picture of her, I was drawn to her cute little bottom teeth, her naturally pink cheeks, and her little downy hair curling out at the sides. However, a few things disappointed me about the picture. For one thing, it's slightly out of focus, I wasn't crazy about her brightly colored shirt, and the exposure was off. So, here are the steps I took to take the picture from so-so to better.

Here is the picture again, SOOC:

The first thing I did was remove the scratch on her face and the slight shadow under her eyes.

Next, I went in and used an eye-pop action on her eyes *obviously* but only on the catch lights in her eyes.

Next I sharpened her face a little bit. This helped some with the focus problem. Her cheeks were naturally pink, but I went in and added just a little bit more... not too much, though, because I think the blush-worn-on-a-baby look is creepy.

Then, I went in and lightened the shadows behind the couch. It doesn't make a huge difference, just makes the background a little less complicated and her face stand out more.

Her shirt is okay in this picture, but I'm not crazy about it. Plus, I think the busyness competes with the rest of her cuteness. So I lighted and desatured the color in her shirt. That made me feel a lot better.

Next, I added a slight background fade and a slight warming filter... very slight.

Finally, I cropped it just a bit. And there you have it! Not my most favorite picture ever from a composition point of view, but now I forever have the memory of her soft little baby hair wings and two-tooth smile. *sigh* I love you, baby girl!

My little boo-boo's hair is exactly the same! (by the way, how old is Mia?) I can't wait for her locks to fill in so I can utilize all the barrettes I keep accumulating:)

She's 16 months now--I can't believe how fast it's going. And ditto on the hair. I can't wait to do the two little sprite-like pig tails on top of her head. :)

She's adorable with her little wings. Mullets are coming back in though ;) haha! kidding ;)

Thanks so much for the step by step, that was very helpful! What program do you mostly use to edit your pics? I do Photoscape and Picasa 3 but I don't know how to do the eye pop, or take out shadows. Do you know how to do that on those programs??

I wrote everything down but, frankly, it's like your speaking another language! I am going to TRY it later anyway though. Thanks!

I downloaded Picasa, Lori, so I could look at it and see how much you could try to recreate there. Btw, did you get my message, Lori, about resending your email? I think Mia erased it while she was playing with my blackberry.

Ariana (or anyone else) would you like the exact steps in photoshop? It wouldn't take much to include them, I just didn't haven't b/c I didn't know how many people would actually use it.

Elisha, to remove under eye shadows I mostly use the patch tool, but sometimes clone stamp. You could also air brush them out at a low opacity, but I think the first 2 options are better. Let me know if you need more specifics. :)

No I didn't get your message, but I will resend the email. Was it the one about the gc?

hi, i know you did this post a long time ago and i have just now gotten around to asking you about it! i have photoshop cs4...i would be interested in knowing how you get the color pop action and how you enhanced the catchlights in her eyes. if you ever post more on your photography, i would be interested in the exact steps in photoshop. your photos are done so nicely. i don't know how to remove shadows or blemishes. that made such a difference in your photo! well this is long enough! i do enjoy your blog and all of your clothing and shoes are so beautiful...you are so talented! have a great day! :)
