Little Bella and Editing

A long time ago, I was inspired by the Pinoneer Woman to post a couple before and after pictures on photo editing. At the time, I received several emails saying they were fun and I should do more. Well, six months later {he, he}... here we are!

These pictures are of one of my regular customer's daughter. Angelica first purchased shoes from me way in the beginning, maybe even before I was putting them in fabric bags. Thanks, Angelica, for letting me share little miss B's lovely face with everyone.

So, this is the picture SOOC {straight ouf of the camera.}

I have to say, it's an amazingly great photo just as is. But, we can make it better... Let's start with a color boost. I use Nicole Van's. Or click here BEFORE and AFTER

Next, smooth the skin a little, lighten the bags under her eyes {even little kiddos have them}, and remove any redness.... It's really important to GO EASY. I look back at some older pictures and Mia looks like the first baby to ever have an eye lift. Subtle is best. Can you see the difference?

Finally, brighten her eyes with an "eye pop" filter and sharpen everything just a little.

So... BEFORE

I'm not done playing, after all, who needs to be dressed before 10 am anyway? So, let's try Pioneer Woman's "Seventies Filter," but only at 50% opacity... more vintage-looking, love it...

Or, Pioneer Woman's "Lovely and Etheral" and run an extra color pop. Love this, too.

Isn't this fun? Editing pictures can completely change the look of a photo. I use photoshop, but there are some decent free editing programs out there. You can see the links in this post. {I look at those pics and think, Ewww. Too yellow. I've gotten so much better.}

Okay, one more....
BEFORE

AFTER {removed the doors in the background and reduces the saturation of everything except the shoes, flowers, and cheeks}

Thanks, Angelica, for letting me share photos of your little miss! She's a doll! Happy Monday!

WOW! What beautiful lil girls:) I wish that I would take more time to edit my photos...I have so many that could/would be wonderful if I just took the time to edit! It seems that I don't take the time to do these things for a while and then all of a sudden I am freaking out that I am behind on the kids baby books, haven't even started a scrap book for my youngest (she's 18 months old for gosh sake) and then I go a little crazy and spend hours and hours trying to get caught up. Only to realize that for the last 2 or 3 weeks now I havent been taking the photos I need or want and I am missing out on great photo opps...therefore the cycle continues and I put away the editing tools and scrapbooks to capture more priceless moments...Whew, I wear myself out just thinking about it sometimes. LOL

*big sigh* I wish I had the paitience for photoshop!

Your beautiful photos make me want to persevere!

Jessica Haley said...

Oh the pressure we put on ourselves as moms! It's exhausting, isn't it, LaDawn?

Because I spend so much time editing, I don't scapbook. I've found I'd rahter have just a few amazing photos from one year, rather than a big book of every moment. I also like using blurb or even snap fish and have the best pictures published in a photobook. You can pick your best photos, and they have a program that will generate a book for you. I tweak it a little, but it's pretty good--and QUICK! :)

If you're waiting for another $2 giveaway, it's coming... getting weekend orders in the mail is priority #1. :)

Mrs.LifeAccounts said...

I'm with you LaDawn! I used to scrapbook a lot, now I'm lucky if I remember to take photos, much less find the time to edit them or upload them into a blurb album. This is definitely something that I want to learn though, thank you so much for putting this post together Jess, you are giving me the push that I need to start thinking seriously about this! (although I need to upgrade my camera before anything else...oh and get a new computer...but small details, right?) Your pictures are beautiful in both the before's and afters! I admit, I've never edited a single photo before, I think I find starting the process very overwhelming. Hmmm...maybe I'll start bugging you more for tips! :) I'm suuuure you have time to give lessons on the side, right?

Just saw your comment, Amy. I do not find photoshop to be very user-friendly nor to be a touch-and-go program. IT's worth the time and energy to watch some free tutorials and cut down on frustration. Like I said, Pinoeer Woman has some great step-by-step lessons for people who don't know much about PS.

Hana, if you're reading, what online tutorials do you recommend for navagating photoshop?

Alisha said...

Great job! Thank you for taking the time to teach us how to make our photos look better. I would love to watch the tutorial you mentioned.

Little Bella is adorable..so cute..

Another $2GA...Oh, I pray I am not in a meeting when you post it...

Jessica Haley said...

Well, it's not going to be until later today or even tomorrow. Does that help ;)

Alisha said...

You mean I will actually be able to get work done today :)

Hey Jess,
Honestly, I am still trying to figure out how to navigate photoshop myself and I am constantly learning. For me, I find www.youtube.com very helpful b/c so many people post video tutorials on how to use the different tools w/in the program. I am on there all the time watching videos trying to figure stuff out. I'm a very visual learner so they really do help me. I google "how to ________ in photoshop" and I find a lot of stuff that way although many times it ends up taking me to some video on youtube! Another way I cheat is by using actions. Rita from www.coffeeteaphotography.blogspot.com has soooo many free actions, templates, textures and tutorials on how to use them. For most of my edits I do some white balance adjustments using the dropper in Levels, a slight Curves adjustment, and then run one of my many color pop type actions. If it's a close-up of a face I'll then use Rita's eye bright action to brighten the eyes a bit. The Flickr community also has a wealth of information w/in the group forums and many people share free actions and textures as well. I'm a flickr addict....always in the forums asking questions! I hope this helps you or some of your readers.

Gorgeous photos Jess! LOVE her sweet smile. Learning to photo shop is on my wish list.

Alisha, you crack me up. Are we all addicted or what? I have not had a chance to stop today and Lane is cutting teeth so we were up ALL NIGHT. My son wants to go to the apple orchard. So I am going to pump myself full of coffee & take the kiddos to the orchard. Hope I don't miss the goodies or the surprise. :)

Alisha said...

Mande, oh yes very addicted... I am just glad I am not alone :)
Sorry to hear about Lane. It is so hard when they are in pain. Have a wonderful time at the apple orchard it sounds lovely.

Hana, thank you for all the great tips on photoshop..

Mande said...

Hana- thank you. Jess, I have over 1,000 pics of Lane and have not even started a book. Yikes. I like your suggestion of a few great shots and editing those. LaDawn, maybe you can come over for coffee and we can sit and put those long overdue books together of the babies. :)

Mande said...

Alisha, we were typing at the same time. hehe. I had Harrison all ready to go & Lane fell asleep in her high chair. So maybe in an hour we will get out the door to pick a few apples. Maybe.

Jenny Plumb said...

I second on Hana. Rita from Coffeeshop.com has wonderful tutorials, and her actions make editing a photo a quick fix for color pops, etc. Adjusting the levels (especially using the white dropper), curves (make a very slight "s" shape), and some light brightening and contrast can do wonders to a photo. I wish I had a clone brush for real life to get rid of bags under the eyes!

Megan said...

What a beautiful little girl! and thanks for the editing tips :) with three girls of my own I constantly have the camera out and at the ready. i think i have been at it a little much this week though b/c my 2 year old told me " mommy i not gonna smile any more " as she covered her eyes. so now i will be able to spend some time making those pictures just perfect. thanks jessica!

You California gals who are meeting up to pick apples, I'm jealous! I love fall. It's 90 today. Well, I guess not every day will be a 70 degree concert at the symphony...

Have fun picking apples, bring your camera and share pictures. :)

LaDawn D said...

Mande, I would absolutely LOVE to have a cup of coffee and work on some baby books with you! What time should I be there? Oh yes, remember I live in North Dakota and it will prbably take me quite a few hours to arrive:)

I am absolutely jealous of ALL of you California and Texas girls...today is raining, with winds of around 20 mph...and did I mention it is 46 degrees outside? LOL Yep, this is the sacrifice I make to stay close to family (although well worth it) I really wish that we had settled into a nice cozy state with sunshine more than 3 months a year!! Don't feel too bad for me thought, I really do love our town and its homey atmosphere, and my kids are growing up with cousins and aunties and uncles all around, so we have a lot of great moments in "bad" weather. Plus, we are very blessed to have the jobs we have here in ND.

I have been wondering what a lot of the other mothers "addicted" to MJ do? Are most of you stay at home mommies? I work full time as the office manager of a helicopter company, and my husband is a coal miner (not underground, thank god!). he operates draglines to remove the top layers of soil and then they harvest the coal and use it for energy. The company located right beside them uses the excess bi-products to make other forms of energy and together they make a really good "team" with very little waste.

So this is my fam in a nut shell...I would also like to say Thanks to those of you have been following and commenting on my blog. yes, my girls all have some really crazy curls...thank the Lord they love MJ barrettes, or else they would never let me fix their hair (and afros just aren't a good look on girls:)

Jess, I am working on learning to control my anxiety over the pressures of doing it ALL as a mommy. Maybe you can give me some tips on that!!! LOL

Alisha said...

LaDawn,
You are so blessed to live close to your family. I would give up this warm weather anyday to be in Michigan with mine.
My husband and I both work at our church. I work full time as the office manager and Josh (my hubby) is an associate pastor, the creative director and a part time instructor at our college. Our church is what keeps us here in Stockton, California far away from our families.

Great job on the photos! I love to scrapbook, but like most people I do not have much time to do it.

We are transitioning into fall over here in good old Maryland. Every year I fall in love all over again with the North East as the fall and spring are just GORGEOUS. Currently we are experiencing a lot of sunny days in the upper 60's low 70's with a slight breeze and a fall chill in the air first thing in the morning and late at night. Occasional rainy days mixed in there. We live close to all my family, both immediate and extended and his family is also from the North East so they are not too far away. The husband and I are both CPA's. He works for an interntional corporation managing their consolidation and IT accounting and I head up accounting work in the healthcare industry.

Hey, Mrs. LifeAccounts, another gal on the east coast!:)I was starting to think I was the only one. Funny I was just noticing today that it seems most of ya'll are on the west side. I live in the good ol VA. I love it here with the history, mountains, and ocean all with in hours drive. Well. the oceans 30 min. from my house but I have to drive for some wonderful mountain air. The best part of the east coast are diffintly the spring and fall seasons!!
As for career, well, I gave mine up to be at home more with my 3 kids:) I worked as a Special Prodjects Coordinator for a large furniture store, Haynes funiture. Jess you may have heard of The Dump in Houston. They're owned by Haynes. Now I work part time as a visual merchandiser. My hubby works for Stihl, a chainsaw company, and has his contracting liscense and does side work, so he stays very busy:( We miss him here at home.

As for scrapbooking, wish I had more time...maybe one day I'll get started on my kids baby books:) Still waiting to start my 10 yr olds...wow, thats bad huh?

Mande said...

Oh I wish I was a California gal. I was a North Carolina gal for a long time but now I live in good ol' Pennsylvania. There is a little town 20 miles west of ours called Hartford and they are famous for their apple orchards. You can pick apples right off the trees or buy them already picked. They also have a nice little pumpkin patch for the kids. (We never made it there today.)
I am a SAHM but worked as a pharmaceutical rep for 9 years. I gave it all up to be home with my son and we decided to have another baby. This is the hardest job & the most rewarding job I have ever had.
I honestly had more free time when I was "employed" and somehow managed my time a little better too. My son has a volume of iphoto baby books for each special moment in his life. My daughter, now 9 months old, does not have 1. OOPS.

Prencie said...

Yay, Mande, another east coast gal :) Is that Hartford, Connecticut? I went there a while back, beautiful up there.

Amy said...

Oh Ladies, I would LOVE to have some cooler weather! I am a CA girl, born and raised. However I am originally from the Sonoma Valley wine country area where it rarely gets over 100 in the summer. Where we live now it is hot hot- 100 degrees today alone!! I just got back from swimming!

I live right down the street from Alisha, actually, and my husband is the youth pastor at the same church Alisha and her husband work at.

I stay home with my babies, but was a 4th grade teacher BK (before kids) :)

Come see us anytime in CA! :)

Mande said...

Prencie- We live near Hartford Ohio. It is a tiny little town with only 1 stop light & the best apples.

Amy- I would come to CA in a heartbeat. My husband had an opportunity to transfer to San Diego about 9 years ago. If the cost of living was not so high there I think we would have. The weather is so nice year round.

Prencie said...

Ok, I so geographically challenged!! For some reason I was thinking Pennsylvania was here on the east coast. Sorry about that Mande, as soon as you mentioned Hartford I thought Connecticut.

Hey, is anyone seeing strange things on Twitter? I had a customer say bizarre things are popping up.

Mrs.LifeAccounts said...

yeah this morning Twitter or the blogging gadget had some hacker problems. I noticed it on your twitter first but many other people had it too. Basically what was showing up on your twitter feed on your website was content from another user, not your own. But that was like 8am-ish this morning my time and it was fixed no later than 9 am-ish my time because I checked my blog (and others) at that time for problems. Lately all the social networks: facebook, twitter and gmail have been getting hit hard by hackers. Everyone majorly freaks out when those networks go down! In fact, facebook had some serious problems yesterday during the evening hours!

Mrs.LifeAccounts said...

ps. what was showing up on your twitter feed this morning was hysterically funny and SO NOT YOU! I almost choked from laughing so hard when I saw it.

Alisha said...

The twiiter comments are still messing up for me when I am on the blog. And as Jen said, we all definitely know they are not from you :)

Mrs.LifeAccounts said...

Huh Alisha, that's strange, they come through totally normal for me now BUT, I did see them for about an hour this morning. I actually took a screen shot of it.

Amy said...

I've been on the blog all morn(of course, what good follower wouldn't be??) and your tweets have been just fine.

Guess my computer is your friend :)

Amy said...

Ok...I must add now I am very curious what these tweets are saying!

Haha Jen cute about the pic.

Show brandon when he gets there Lish, so he can fill me in on all the fun...

Jessica Haley said...

Yeah, something about "hackers taking over the world" and "thanksgiving is coming dont be surprised if I eat you instead of the turkey."

Mrs.LifeAccounts said...

my favorite was the one about taking a bath with dog dribble....

Alisha said...

Okay, maybe I am the only one with a problem :(

Here is one:
having so many werid dreams. @glennym got really fat and we had a fight over something

Crazy people....

Amy said...

OMW - dying! love it.

Mrs.LifeAccounts said...

ok so I looked it up on twitter and it looks like the username "undefined" is coming through on your blogger gadget for some people on your feed. Maybe you can try blocking him from your account and then see if people who could see the funny messages from before are still seeing them.

Jessica Haley said...

Okay, I am finally done playing chauffer. It's raining, I have a hot cup of tea, and can enter into the discussion.

I was born in California {north, Arcata, Ureka}. I grew up in the Chicago land area mostly. Went to college in Michigan {Where ar eyou from Alisha?}, and Robert and I lived there the first 5 years of our marriage by the lake in Holland. We've been in Houston for 4 years now. While most of my family is here and that's good, it's been a difficult transition. I guess you could say I am still trying to find the place where I feel like I fit in here in TX.

Alisha said...

I received your tweets on my phone :) so excited...

Mande said...

OK I missed the one about taking a bath in dog dribble. That is too funny. Some crazy person must have too much time on their hands. Who thinks this stuff up anyways?

Mrs.LifeAccounts said...

ohhh Jessica, I love days like those but ONLY when I can stay home with a hot beveridge and be warm and toasty inside and NOT have to drive around all day.

Amy said...

Jessica, my sister in law and her family live in Humble, TX, just outside of Houston. Is that far from you?

We have been there to visit, although lovely, I can imagine it would be a big swtich from MIchigan!

Alisha said...

I was born in Zanesville, Ohio and lived there until I was 10 {Mande, is that close to where you live?}.
Then my immediate family moved to Taylor, Michigan {Jessica, I am not sure how close it is to Holland}. My parents, brother, his wife and my niece still live there and I miss them all dearly.
My husband's family lives in the Central Coast of California {approx. 4 hours away from us}.

So with no family close by we been very blessed to have many wonderful friends in Stockton that have become like our family.

LaDawn D said...

Oh my, it is REALLY fun getting to know all about my new crew of friends:) I think we might have to have a conference where we can all meet up...New York anyone? hehe

I am still seeing the crazy twitter updates here on my computer (they were there at 8 am as well). They truly are hilarious! I think the one with the "F-bomb" (regarding some guy on a train chewing too loudly) might be my fave..and is also the one that tipped me off that this definitely wasn't Jessica's crew of friends or followers. LOL

Well, I am off to start planning the MAMJ (Mothers Addicted to Mia Joie) conference 2010...I am open to all suggestions! TeeHee

Alisha said...

LaDawn - so funny I have been thinking the same thing.. I would love to go to New York and meet all of you. Sign me up...

Tory, we miss you. Hope all is well.

Alisha said...

This is the latest crazy tweet one.. how rude!

If my tweets are showing on your blog. Please cry to someone else but me. I don't know why, I didnt do it and I cant fix it. thanks

Mrs.LifeAccounts said...

yeah it's so weird, I checked from a different computer and the crazy tweets show up on the one computer and not the other!

Prencie said...

Just now saw the one about eating you instead of turkey?!? Thats too funny and i agree, the last one is rude...

I have family in Houston and San Antonio. My mexican side live there, I'm half white half mexi:)My sister also went to bible college there in Houston, so i've had the pleasure of visiting several times. The Galleria Mall is what had me dumbstruck! At the time I was so young and didn't know that malls existed like that! A mall where you could ice skate in!? :) We are spoiled here in the good ol' USA!

Jessica Haley said...

Okay, so Twitter if officially messed up right now. Thus, I am back to posting up dates in comments. Obviously, I was not able to take the pictures I wanted today. It's been pouring and dark all day. I'll try again tomorrow. The "knock your socks off project" is nearly done. Yeah! Stay tuned....

Precie, you know I've never been to the Galleria, though no one believe me when I tell them.

Alisha said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
Alisha said...

I can hardly wait for the BIG secret to be revealed :)

Prencie said...

Wow, that is hard to believe:) I think that's the first place my family took me when I first visited Houston. Mall of America was also the very 1st place I visited in Minneapolis as soon as I was off the plane...hmmm, wonder why that is :) I'm not a shopaholic, I swear! Well, not a bad one ;)

Mrs.LifeAccounts said...

man the twitter thing is worse! It's happenning on so many more blogs now! I've never seen this happen this bad in all the time I've been on twitter, don't give up on it Jess, it really is a fantastic tool!

Jessica Haley said...

Jen, you must have been reading my mind. I don't know... I'm pulling it for now. I don't like that there is profanity in it. Yeah, we've all heard it, but it's a blog about kids, ya know...

Mande said...

Alisha-Zanesville is only 3 hours from me. I have never been there though. I live in PA and have never been to Hershey either. Pretty sad.

Jess I can relate to finding where you fit in. We lived away for 10 years and moved back home thinking everything would be like it was. Even at home we sometimes feel out of place. I am looking into local mommy day out groups to see if there are any I would fit in with. Are there any mommy networks near you? Has anyone blogging tried these before?

Hope you all have a blessed Wednesday!

Mrs.LifeAccounts said...

Jess, I totally get where you're coming from, I have already pulled it from my blog because even though I'm not the one writing it I don't like the reflection on me, yah no? All I meant was, it's a great tool and they're obviously going to have to do some kind of major revamp to fix this problem, I just feel bad that this happened right after you tried it!

Hey prencie! I'm mexican too.. Well my great grandparents were spanish... in both sides... but i was born and raised in Mexico. Proud to be a mexican! great country. I follow all your conversations and i think I know a lot of all you guys! But i'm not that fluent in english and i'm a little bit shy to write in english... But here i am... so take me into account! :) A mexican mother addicted to Mia Joie!! Jessica i used to live in Houston... My husband worked at a clinic there... He is a Neuroscientific doctor... I lived there 1 and a half years... Then moved here to Monterrey, MX

Mrs.LifeAccounts said...

Hi Vero! So glad you joined the fun! Your english is quite good, much much better than my spanish! :)

I agree, Vero, your English is fantastic! Welcome to the club! :)

Prencie said...

Hi Vero! Nice to meet you!:) My family is from Monterrey also!! Small world! My mother is from there, her maiden name is Flores. I agree with the other ladies your English is very good. I wish I knew Spanish:( My mother never taught me.

Vero Garcia said...

Thanxs everybody!! Prencie that's too bad you don't know spanish if you are half mexican... but if you live in US i know it's quite difficult to speak it and practice it only in your home... i'm trying to teach my kids french and english (i'm more fluent in french) so they can speak 3 languages... it's easier when they are little... I started with both languages when i was 10 years old and i think it was more difficult.. (I love languages you can tell)
