On The Hunt

"Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts."
~Rachel Carson

One of the things that sustains me in life is the beauty in every day: the ray of sun coming in the window just so, a flower in perfect bloom, a small little pink mercury vase I found at a home store. I know, it might seem trite or even silly. But, heck, when you are home raising children, life is about the mundane; thus, finding beauty in it makes the journey more joyful or in some cases, just palpable. As LaDawn wrote in a previous comment, it's a way of, "making the journey it's own reward."

So, I love scouring stores for interesting and beautiful materials, especially if they are unique. On our trip to Austin, I was able to spend a little over an hour at just such a place. It was stocked with beautiful silks....

...in a variety of shapes and sizes... I didn't photograph the sparkly ones with gems and rhinestones... *swoon*

But most importantly, it's filled with all kinds of inspiration. I spent an arm and a leg on some amazing little gems. I'm not going to show you any pictures, lest I give away too much, but I will say that I found some amazing vintage silk shantung in a sea glass color. {There's your hint.} It has a ticking stripe, and the owner told me she bought it personally from a boutique owner in France. I also purchased some rhinestone and aurora borealis buttons, either in German glass or from European flea markets. I just love items with a history. I don't think I ever mentioned this, but my wedding ring is a 4th generation antique. I like vintage things {used in a fresh and modern way} because in a corporate, big box world, it's becoming more rare to have something with a history... something that is one-of-a-kind. Anyway, that's how I see it. I can't wait to make what I have in my mind's eye... but you know me, I say "in a week," but who really knows for sure. Hope you had a fantastic weekend!

Oh, forgot to add, I have a friend scouring bazaars in India for hand-dyed organic fabric. How fun is that??

wow! beautiful! I can't wait to see what you make from all that either. The silk is stunning!

My wedding ring is also vintage, my grandmothers from the early 1930's...so special.

Sounds like you had fun! :)

Yes, we did have fun! {I wrote a couple details in a comment in the previous post.} I am sending you a convo right now, actually... :)

Oh, my ring was my great grandmother's. It is white gold with a square illusion setting. :)

Well, now that looks fun. I could spend hours in a place like that dreaming up possibilities. How did you keep it to just about an hour? There is no place like that around here. I would have to go three hours to San Francisco.

Love the little sneak peaks. What gorgeous fabrics. Finding joy in the simple things....is so fantastic when you are home with the kiddos all day. Would not trade it for the world. Cannot wait for my favorite Mia Joie item of all to post soon. Seriously, I am even more of a nut for the sea glass than my daughters little shoes. And I did not think that was even remotely possible. :)

Last night I was thinking about the fabric and had all these ideas swimming through my head and had trouble sleeping. Ever happen to you?

Anyway, some of things in my mind's eye you have seen and some are completely different. Even though my passion is to create new things, I'm trying to force myself to slow down. I feel a little dizzy with busy-ness these days....

*swoon* I love sea glass! I love to decorate with it and I actually almost had my wedding dress made out of a favorite seaglass color, in the end I was only able to get the sash in that color). Those pictures are gorgeous and I am extremely excited to see what you come up with. I'm thinking it will be very elegant with the vintage buttons and silk. Sigh, I'll just have to day dream while waiting for a sneak peek!

I hear you on vintage rings, I adore vintage rings and wear one as well! And yes, I'm quite familiar with the staying up all night due to ideas racing and whirling through your head, I haven't decided yet whether I enjoy it or hate it because it takes away my precious sleep. It does give me great ideas and inspiration though!

Oooh, how badly I just want to wrap myself up in the beauty that this wonderful shop has!!! I can just imagine how your mind was leaping with innovation....and us lucky readers are all just dying to see what that innovation leads too:) We know that we are the ones who will reap the many benefits that your talents are going to create and that is an amazing feeling on our end!

It's funny how often your name comes up in our house each day as we look at a new dress or fix hair...around my house you are as popular as renting a movie (a very popular event at our house)! All 3of my girls actually beg me to use MJ hair clips each and every time I am fixing hair in the morning! It is funny that my 3 year old who has developed her own STRANGE style in the past few months wants to be sure it "matches" So as we are discussing or in most cases fighting about the crazy get up she wants to wear to church (or anywhere for that matter) she looks at me with her sweet little face and says "But it matches my new cwips!" hehe And I have on more than one occasion this past week just melted and let her go out looking like a fairy tale creature with cute hair "cwips!" hehe
And oh my youngest baby (18 months now) has run to the shoe bins every morning and grabbed her new favorite pair of shoes!! (the belle in pink) The first day she wore them we got to daycare and she wouldnt let me take them off...she stood in fromt of our sweet daycare lady and just kept kicking her shoes up toward her face until she heard how beautiful her new shoes were! LOL And I thought I was the one obsessed with shoes:)

How can we ever thank you for giving soooo much of yourself to all of us strangers?

LaDawn, that's a pretty cute "cwip" story. Mia has developed an opinioned fashion sense as well. Today when I put on her shoes, she said, "No, no, BLUE!" {She has a pair of the Lauren shoes.} Then, she insisted that she wear them with a pair of socks. Kids are so funny....

Yummm, sea glass blue. My new favorite color combo is that with baby pink:) Sort of a vintage appeal. I've been doing my baby girls nursery using that color scheme. Shabby chic with a french provencial twist, I'm lovin it:)

Silk is so beautiful to work with, the sheen, the texture, the beauty...so romantic. My wedding dress was a pale pink silk :)Can't wait to see what you have in store for us!

Yes, I know exactly what it's like to lose sleep due to a brilliant idea forming in your head!! That's when I have to get up and write it down so that I don't forget by morn what it is that had me so excited. I've had to stop looking at things that inspire me at night, my heart rate gets going and then there goes my sleep:)

Oh, and fabrics from India...Amazing!! My little Lexi is 1/2 Indian. The fabrics and saris that my in-laws come back with from their trips to India are just stunning! Oh the things you could make :)

Best Wishes,
Stacy
