Twitter

Who needs another form of social media? Apparently I do. It's the easiest way to drop a line or two about when I am going to list things, which is why I opted to join. Thus, you can see updates here:

------------------------------------------------------------------>

Etsy was down last night, so I couldn't send emails or print shipping labels. I know I said I would list more dresses today, but Etsy being down has made me behind, so I want a day to catch up. As I mentioned, I am hoping Twitter will be an easy venue to drop a line or two about listings.

So, I am curious, do you Twitter? Yes or no and why? Do you think we are social media crazed?

Just to clarify, you do NOT need to join Twitter and become a follower to get listing updates! I joined only so I can use it to preview what I will be listing, which you can find on my right side of my blog w/o logging into Twitter, becoming a Twitter follower, yadda yadda yadda...

I do use twitter, (purelyelegant) but it's hard because currently I don't have a phone with a data plan so...I have to log in and manually refresh to get updates...I can't download any kind of tweet deck to my companies computer. That being said, I do think it's really fun and I enjoy using it, sometimes I just don't have the time or energy to write up a blog post nor is what I'm saying very interesting. :)

It's funny, Jen, I mean about writing interesting things. A while back, MSN did this page on Facebook personalities and how people tend to write the same type of update on their wall: the song quoter, the constant complainer, the cryptic writer, the TMI sharer, etc. Then the MSN writer said they wonder how in all this social media updates we have time to lead interesting lives.... point taken, I guess.

My problem is that it is easy to develop a social network that is too large to maintain. At least, that seems to be my struggle as the moment.

An interesting point, I think I reached my breaking point awhile back with facebook status/twitter updates/g'chat status/blogging and now I only update or write in the various mediums when I have something to say or want to say something. Emphasis on the want! It's something that I enjoy very much (most of the time) but with constant incessant chatter, silence can be golden and there is nothing that really needs to be said. At the same time, I only have a certain amount of time on this earth and do I want to spend my time writing about it or living it? I try to do the best I can combining both.

I agree, Jen, I think that just like anything else in has it's place.

When Aidan was 18 months, he was a ferocious biter. It was summer time so I wasn't teaching, but I also didn't feel comfortable going to playgroups... never knew when he might take a chop. Anyway, I spent a lot of time at home. It was so lonely. My friends were very kind, but none of them had biters themselves. Social media would have been a great venue to connect with other moms who could relate. Of course, many of those venues didn't even exist at that time.

On the other hand, I don't want social media to be such a commitment that I am really only living vicariously, or I am so "plugged it" that is detracts me from my family.

If twittering means Mia Joie updates I will join, but I have hesitated to open an account b/c I did not really want 1 more thing taking away from the kiddos, nor do I have much interesting to say. You inspired me to start a blog page too- nothing fancy, but without you I would not have started one. OK, now I am off to join another social media site. :)

not a twitter-er! use my blog and that is it! used to have a myspace, tried facebook for a red-hot second, and got as far as the log in page for twitter, but, no dice!

i will have to be lucky to get any of your products from now on!

Jessica Haley said...

Oh my goodness, no, no, no! You do NOT have to join twitter to be updated on my listings! Gosh, Jenni, I'm so glad you said something.

The only reason I joined Twitter is so I can have that one line on my blog that I can update easily and is highly visible. It's too much work to create a blog post just to say, "This is when I will be listing new products." So, if you want to know what I am working on or will be listing soon, that's where you will fine it.

Make sense? I would never force you to join yet another social venue....

i too am not a twitterer. i follow your blog and a few others but have been able to keep from being pulled into yet another social media until now. I created an account to get your updates and found that quite a few of the blogs I follow also have twitter accounts. so my dilemma is which do i follow, twitter or blog? the blogs are so much more personal with the fun photos ( love the buttons btw ) and the longer posts but the twitter seems more convenient for those, like you, who wish to post something small, like an update for listings and such. So the hard part will be following both, but when theres a will theres a way :)

Megan said...

wonderful, i just read the post before mine, we must have been synchronized typing or something they just both popped up, i am happy that i will still be able to follow just your blog, that makes life so much easier :)

Thanks for the follow on Twitter Jessica! Looking forward to hearing from you there.

Twitter, as with most things in life, is all good in moderation...

Twitter is a great tool and if you use it to make your life easier (communicating to your mass of fans) and don't allow it to dictate your life you'll be set.

Thanks for sharing the beautiful photos... stunning! I can't wait to see what you create with these as your muse.

Have a great week!

I think we are posting at the same time, Megan. I am not that into Twitter either, but since my customers have been asking for updates, having a little line that I can "Tweet" is the most convenient for me and more visible than a comment in a blog post.

As for blogging, I agree... it's more personal, has pictures, is inspiring, etc. I prefer it as well.

Just a little FYI: You can create a twitter account and then have tweets sent to your phone ONLY FROM the twitter people you want.

For example, I get tweet postings in my text messages from my husband, but no one else. I never go on to twitter to post anything.

And Mrs. Life (Jen?), I don't have a data package either, but I get all my husband's tweets.

So Jessica, people could follow you by just getting your tweets sent to their phone only and not have to go to the twitter page. I never do...

hope this helps.

Jessica Haley said...

See, I didn't even know I could get tweets on my phone... or maybe you mean email, if you have a balckberry.

Anyway, sorry about the pictures. I'm trying to figure out what happened..

Amy said...

They come as a text message. YOu can set it up that way. All someone has to do is become your follower and then request to have your tweets sent via text to their phone.

Jenni said...

sounds so confusing! i will eventually "tweet" (sounds so cute! i love me some birdies!) but don't have time to figure it out all just yet (still need to take my sewing lessons!). in time, i am sure i will be a fellow twitterer!

glad to know that i can still see updates via the blog!

Amy said...

To get tweets via texts:

*Go into twitter profile and become a follower of whomeover (Jessica, etc)

*Click on your followers which is listed on the right side of page

*Once the people who you are following comes up, there will be a little phone icon to right of their name, click on it to enable getting their tweets via SMS (text message)

Thats it! You never have to visit twitter.com again :)

Amy is correct, however just an FYI, you are not required to give a cell phone number when you sign up, just an email address. So if there is no phone showing next to someone's name its because you have not entered in your phone number or chosen to have the tweets sent to your phone. If you want to take advantage of the option Amy is talking about, you may need to go into your settings: devices, add your cell phone and then text from your phone to twitter to confirm it's your phone (they will give you instructions for this) and THEN, after that you can click the phone next to someone's name and have their updates sent you your phone! Also, this is probably a given, but just in case, while twitter is free, you do have to pay whatever your cell phone plan charges for receiving texts on your phone (vs. email or reading it on twitter or the blog).

Oh, mercy! I added Twitter b/c I thought it would make it easy... :)

I do not "tweet", lol, it is fun to say. I am soo behind the times! Use to have myspace, just recently got into facebook and started a blog page. So goodness, tweeting too? Yeah, gets to be a lot. I do enjoy your blog so much, as long as I can stay update through that, than I'm happy:)

Ok, so I do have a twitter account...but I really haven't used it that much! I think this will be my way of checking out what twitter can actually do!?!? I too am feeling like there are soooo many sources to share, write in, and develop that I think I need to get a new more tech saavy phone just ot keep up! LOL I have chosen to use facebook with my old school friends and now more recently my blog for close family and friends....I will soon be using twitter for MJ updates and I think I am going to be "computered out" after that:) hehe

Jessica I do think that twitter will end up being a fabulous way for you to quickly and easily post and update your large crew of followers...I think in the end it will be a great addition for you and the Mia Joie company!!!

And to all of the wonderful people that comment, although sometimes there may be pressure to write something really profound, I find myself having a blast reading everybody's "normal" comments! It is just fun to see or read what is on the MJ addicts minds:) Keep posting!!!!

Mrs.LifeAccounts said...

Jessica, when you are you going to create a Mia Joie community board where we can all hang out and chat!?! lol...I'm just teasing you, don't get any ideas!

Mande said...

Whew, so glad to hear I do not have to twitter to get updates. I still have not made it there to set up an account, and after this long day, maybe I will try it another day. It sounds like a much easier avenue for you Jessica. For now I will check along the column in your blog for the twitter update. Thanks for that!
I like the rest of the MJ fan club, love the personal touch of your blog and the pics of your kiddos, and the fun updates. Hope you have a nice night! :)

Haven't done the twitter thing, either, guess I was hoping it would be a fad that would phase out. If it really does stay the course, I'll give in. For now, though, have barely been able to keep up with personal emails let alone the new blog. I always find time to read yours though. It's just uplifting and something I look forward to.

I did receive your email--cannot thank you enough for the encouragement, Jessica! Too exhausted to respond in full--but, I will, I promise. Soon. For now--yes, ok to send, and lets wait for the fall line rather than sending a check. You're the best! I promise to write you back soon!

I read your interview/article on Etsy and wanted to say congrats on all your success!

I use twitter but I'm still trying to figure it all out. I sometimes seem overwhelmed by all the social media out there and wonder if I should stick to my blog only???

Jessica Haley said...

Thanks, Vintage Chain! What article--the one on hand made news?

I love blogs! As for Twitter, err... still figuring that one out myself! :)

I have a twitter account but never use it really. I don't have a blackberry either. Whenever I get one I'll probably "tweet" more. I'm on the computer enough as it is between email, blogging, flickr, FB, and editing photos so I just don't get over to twitter much. I think about it though...does that count?
