At our house, we have found that bedtime can either be a delight or a chore, which depends largely on story time. I don't know what it is, but the thought of reading certain story books is sublimely unappealing to me. {There are some books that I just don't particularly like, or, even though the kids asked to hear it, it's a fight the whole way through to keep their attention. Then I end up saying something like, "Fine, if you're not going to listen, then lights out and off to bed!}

However, we have recently discovered the Humphrey books, and it has added such a sweet component to our bedtime routine! They are written by British author, Sally Hunter. They have beautiful, whimsical illustrations, and wholesome, relate-able story lines for the kids. The stories are centered around two sibling elephants, Lottie and Humphrey. I enjoy these books, not only because the pictures are sweet and emotionally poignant, but I love the subtle ways these stories capture the humorous harmony of both the love and fatigue of a parent. Like when Humphrey gets a "real proper superhero suit" on the morning of his birthday and starts doing jumps and flips off his daddy who is still under the covers. To which his mom replies: "Okay, let's see who needs rescuing. Downstairs." Or the artful way in which Sally Hunter depicts a house inhabited by children that is consequently strewn about with toys and stuffed animals... and nearly every room has mom's forsaken cup of coffee. Oh, how I can relate!

I highly recommend both Humphrey's Birthday and Humphrey's Bedtime, but the kid's definitely prefer the the latter. My children {like all kids, I think} love to imitate. So, it adds a measure of joy and anticipation to their evening routine: "Can we make big bubble mountains in the bath, just like Humphrey?" Sally Hunter, as mentioned, is British, so the children in the story have supper time before bed. Aidan has since taken to serving him and his sister little trays of snacks in the evening hours. It's adorable.

In Humphrey's Bedtime the opening page features two pairs of slippers, seen below.

Whenever we read the story, Mia always says, "Hey, mom, you could make us those." Right she is! So, I made Mia and Aidan matching slippers, which they have enjoyed so much. It's such a lovely story, that I decided to share it with you! So, I am giving away one Humphrey's Bedtime book and matching pair of made-to-order slippers from newborn up to size 8. The slippers are lined in organic fleece, and the outside is made from nubby organic cotton terry cloth. I didn't want to exclude those not on Facebook, so for this giveaway, please comment on this blog post to be entered. I love how your little girl wanted you to make her these precious little shoes so while reading this book she could play act apart of the book in her real life bedtime ritual. Great job mommie as to helping with her imagizantion.
