DIY Wednesday - Lace Crowns

Luna Clip and matching shoes
Yesterday I posted some photos of our Luna shoes and matching clip with the crown above. Mia and I made the crown together, and today I will show you the step by step to make your own lace crown.
A few notes before I begin the tutorial: this was not my original idea. Most of my tutorials are, but I found this idea via Bitter Betty Blog. You can view her tutorial here. I modified it a bit, which I will explain. Second, I was making these crowns with photography in mind--not so much every day play wear. The crowns do get pretty stiff, but I can't comment how they would hold up or how safe the paint is to be worn and played with regularly by a young child. So, here is what you need:
Materials:
lace - 13-15" depending on desired size
fabric stiffener or modge podge
gold, bronze or silver paint or a paint pen
wax paper
Tools:
paint brush
glue gun
Let's talk supplies :) For the silver crown, I used some really interesting, really wide crocheted trim. The crochet actually seemed to absorb the stiffener a little bit better and make a more sturdy crown. However crocheted lace trimming can be a little hard to come by {mine was vintage that I bought in the city} so I will show you how to use a thinner, more readily available lace. I got the one in the example at Hobby Lobby.

However crocheted lace trimming can be a little hard to come by {mine was vintage that I bought in the city} so I will show you how to use a thinner, more readily available lace. I got the one in the example at Hobby Lobby.

Once you have your lace, cut it to 13"-15" inches depending on desired size. I think the crowns look darling with a small circumference. However, if you want them to really sit down on the head, you will need to go larger.
Next, take your strip(s) of lace and saturate them with fabric stiffener. I bought my bottle of fabric stiffener for $3.99 at Hobby Lobby. I think fabric stiffener is easier to use than modge podge because it's thinner and doesn't glob up the lace like modge podge does. However, I have used both, and both yield good results. So, on a sheet of wax paper, saturate your lace with stiffener, and spread it around with your finger. {You could use a brush, but the bristles kept getting in the glue which was driving me crazy... plus there is something therapeutic about getting a little messy :) }

After the lace has been saturated, blot off excess and allow to dry. You will need to repeat this 2-4 times, depending on how well the lace absorbs the stiffener.
Once the lace has dried enough so it is no longer tacky, paint it the desired color. For the silver crown, I used a silver acrylic paint pen which worked surprisingly well. In the photo below, I used Precious Metals paint in the color titanium.

After the paint has dried, match up the pattern and glue the lace in a circle with the glue gun {or craft glue}. The crown will stiffen up quite a bit more, after it has had 24 hours to dry. And... you are done! A very pretty and vintage-looking crown... perfect for your prince or princess.

HOW CUUUUUTE!!
Thank you so much for the idea! I made a few last night and even added a few pinches of glitter to a couple. So adorable!
can you post how to make the flower that is on it?? I love the whole thing!!!
so sweet! I've been making knit crowns for newborn photo props for a few months and it seems it's becoming quite popular :) you can check mine out at http://www.etsy.com/shop/NaptimeKnittery?ref=si_shop
Very cute! Thanks for the info.
Thanks for the sweet note, Prencie! I am so glad her hair is growing out after she cut it so short! :)
Brooke, you can buy the clip on our website: joyfolie.com Sorry, but I don't give away all my secrets ;)
Adriane, your crowns are super cute--I love that they are soft and cozy :)
Thank you so much for this tutorial :) Love the Precious Metals paint. Any idea where I could pick this up? I checked at AC Moore and JoAnn Fabrics but they have no idea what I'm talking about. Thank you in advance!
Danielle, all my supplies came from Hobby Lobby :)
You are my new favorite blog. GREAT WORK!
MissMelissBoutique ;)
thanks, Melissa!!! <3
Oh can't wait to try this!
Wow. This is fantastic. LOVE!
Jessica....did you just place it on her head for the photo? Or how did you fasten it to her head?! I love this and need a photo op for my little one as well!
Linz,
Sorry it took me so long to reply! I just placed it on her head. If she moved around--it would fall off. In fact, that is why she is smirking--she was dumping it off her head. {which was frustrating me, and she thought it was hilarious!} You could make them bigger to actually be worn as play wear or maybe use bobby pins to secure them temporarily for a photo (?)
I can't wait to try this. I also couldn't leave without telling you that I normally don't love music on a website but I LOVE your playlist, except that it's costing me a lot of iTunes money! :)
I tried this and I have put three coats of modge podge, the crowns are stiff enough that the lace stands up but it is still flexible. Is it supposed to be stiffer?
wow, this is great, i really like this crown and will try to make it, thanks for the tutorial.
I actually came across this on pinterest but it had it listed as a bracelet instead of a crown. I have never worked with fabric stiffener before so I'm not sure of how to get the bracelet to dry in the cuff shape... around a jar or something?? Ideas would be greatly appreciated.. thank you!!
This is such a beautiful and creative project! I'm so glad I saw it on Pinterest and came your way.
Can't wait to make some for my girls!

Totally making these for my daycare kids for Christmas!!!!!!
Looks like it's going to be a lean Christmas for us. This is a great idea to make for my girls, ages 5 and 4. Thanks for sharing.
Actually, you need to look for either Venise or Cluny lace. Both available, cheap, on ebay. I never, ever, ever buy lace from the fabric or craft store, because it's horrifically expensive there!
J'adore! et les photos sont superbes!
Question, did you fabric stiffen both sides of the lace or just one?? p.s. amazing.
Howdy! This blog post could not be written any better!
Looking at this article reminds me of my previous roommate!
He constantly kept talking about this. I am going to send
this post to him. Pretty sure he'll have a very good read. Thanks for sharing!
