Dancing in the Kitchen

"I can't image in anything by music could have brought about this alchemy.
Maybe it's because music is about as physical as it gets:
your essential rhythm is the heartbeat; your essential sound, the breath.
We are walking temples of noise, and when you add pounding hearts to this mix,
it somehow lets us meet in places we couldn't get to in any other way."

Several years ago, I was at a MOPS retreat--a little getaway for moms set in a cottage in the country by the lake.  It was late and we were sitting on the couch and talking, when one of the moms was saying how she was going to make sure all her kids would know the lyrics to songs of her favorite rock and roll bands.  From there, we were laughing and reminiscing about the music of our childhood... listening to "Everybody Hurts" while swaying at the sock hop, stomping our feet to "We Will Rock You," or cuffing our jeans to "Bust a Move."

Since then, something struck me about the importance of music and it's power to cultivate emotion and solidify a memory.  As the kids have gotten older, it has been an intentional effort of mine to include music among their childhood memories.  While I think there is something transcendent about music centered around worship {one of our fav artists is Shane and Shane} we also listen to a lot of main stream music, too.  Our home is often filled with music, and the kids have each developed their respective favorites.  In fact, I feel like it's given me a bit more insight into their personalities to know each child's preferences.  My seven year old son Aidan has an uncanny amount of physical energy; in fact, so much so that one time he broke his nose and chipped a tooth on the headboard of our bed, just being a super hero.  However, when Aidan listens to music, he seems to prefer acoustic/folksy music or sounds that are soft and lyrical; he often relaxes when he listens and it seems to calm him.  Mia, on the other hand, is my little rocker {in the picture she is belting it out to Kelly Clarkson's Stronger} and loves pop and rock and roll.  One of my biggest dilemmas has been how to handle the kids during the witching hour {you know, that hour before dinner, where they are tired and hungry and tend to whine and fight.  Your kids would never act that way, I'm sure, but that's how it is in our house.}  Well, I have found that is often the best time to turn the music up as loud as it will go and dance in the kitchen.  Also, sometimes at bedtime, the kids request listening to a favorite song instead of a story.  I'm looking forward to taking them to their first concert, when the time seems right.  But overall, my main drive has been that when the kids remember home, not only do they remember times of peace, quiet and safety, but they also have memories of heart-pumping dancing in the kitchen, laughter, and that special type of joy that accompanies music.

What about you?  Do your children love music and how do they respond to it?  Do you dance in your kitchen.... or only when no one is looking? ;)

My daughter LOVES music. 90% of the vidoes we have of her since 6 months old are her wiggling in her chair to "free credit report.com commercials", dancing to the wiggles or just making up her own tune. We took her to the Wiggle concert (at 18months) when they came through town and it may have been the cutest thing I have ever seen. She was awestruck! She is now 4 and musical taste has migrated to what we play at home or in the car. She loves New Order and Erasure, which makes Mommy happy and to Daddy's disappointment does not like The Smiths but begs to have The Black Eyed Peas on repeat. :) The very unfortunate news for her is that she is defefintely her parents daughter....voice=tone deaf!

Ha, Ha! Maria, I would agree that when we sing, it definitely falls into the "joyful noise" category! :) I think what was most interesting is that I have had to be intentional about playing music. In my experience, in our culture, it is a lot easy to have the TV on or surf the web, than regularly play music. Having an iHome for our apple products really help... and my kids know how to navigate through an ipod themselves :)

Love this picture of Mia! You can so tell your daughter is pouring her heart and soul into this :) Music brings life to another dimension. Music and dancing is a big thing for our little family. We dance everyday in the kitchen. And the living room. And the bathroom. And the street. There's nothing that makes us feel better than that :)

Wow, what a stunning picture of Mia, she looks so beautiful belting it out! What a capture you got there!

My kids both love to sing, especially Lola - - really loud! I have several videos of her singing "Halo" by Beyonce while driving in the car with the headphones on! Their little voices when they sing are just precious!

My husband loves music especially and it is nearly always playing when he is home. I am more of a classical girl, it calms me amongst the chaos of life with 4 kids. My kids all love to dance and we make up a lot of silly songs too.

aww that post brought back so many memories! Me and my kids used to dance in the kitchen to loud music (the Newsboys are great to do this to!) and it always helped make everyone in a good mood. Great memories. I hope the kids have them too, once they're out of teenagerhood when everything is negative! :)

My 9-months-old daughter Sofia began to wiggle when she even couldn't sit up)))I suppose she could feel the music 'cause I always tried to dance folding her in my arms. Now she could hardly sit still when she hears a rousing tune from TV or our laptop.

P.S. I agree- the photo is so amasing!

Wonderful picture of your girl. I have five kids ranging in age from 24 to 7 and each of them has a signature song from me. It is theirs and only theirs and they love it. I think I will post about that soon. Have a blessed day.

Thesis writing involves several processes which makes the entirety of the experience both exciting and challenging. From choosing a researchable topic that has not been done by other students and eventually narrowing it down to become a uniquely original work to soliciting the help of a research supervisor and in embarking on data collection and writing the paper, these are some of the tasks that almost all undergraduate and graduate students working on a thesis consider as stressful. In spite of the many challenges that students have to put up with, undeniably, the thesis project is an important project-based and challenge-based educational experience that helps in building character and in preparing students for their chosen career. One particular skill that is indispensable and which perhaps is unknowingly cultivated among students as they work on a thesis is the ability to work with a group of superiors.
